The beauty of social media is discussion. Through close knit communities and relationships, discussion thrives among blogs, forums, status updates, and the need to be a part of the conversation. But healthy conversation and discussion can only exist when both sides are present.
Let your readers disagree with you. Thank them for adding their opinion to the mix and for opening your eyes to the other side of the conversation.
Encourage your readers to discuss your writing, not just agree with it. Reward those who disagree just as much as those who think you are God's gift to blogging. Don't censor your readers to suit your agenda.
Don't talk to yourself. Have a conversation with the rest of us. We'd love to take part!

You're right though, encouraging comments, discussion and even disagreements do forge community.
